Lost Didgeridoo Forest?

Remembering Heath Ledger as Didgeridoo Player

Before Heath became an actor he was slated to be a pro surfer, and he was also a fairly accomplished didgeridoo player. He even turned up playing didge in a surfing video by Billabong called “Bunyip Dreaming”. When Heath was a guest on the Ellen Show in 2004 he borrowed some didgeridoos from us for a funny bit. After the show aired I put both of the didgeridoos that Heath and Ellen played up for auction on eBay. They were truly great sounding instruments, and Heath picked out the one he played (it was made by an aboriginal fella in Darwin, Australia, named Naminu). I should have kept those didges in my personal collection. Naminu doesn’t even make didgeridoos any more, as he’s gone on to become quite an accomplished artist.

We miss Heath. Helluva nice guy. RIP, bro.

New Didgeridoo Streaming Channel From LA Outback

LA Outback has just launched our official Didgeridoo Streaming Channel which will broadcast didgeridoo events, live performances, instructional resources and much more. The first event to be featured is tonight’s Art of the Didgeridoo exhibit at the Aboriginal Dreamtime Gallery in Los Angeles. LA Outback will be broadcasting the opening ceremony of the month long event from 7-10 PM Pacific time.

For those planning on attending the event, be sure to arrive early and get situated with parking as the neighborhood can be busy on a Saturday night. The restaurant Artichoke across the street will offer $8 valet parking, or you can park at the Pacific Design Center for $10 if there is no street parking.

Lewis Burns Playing at “Art of the Didgeridoo”

Great news: Lewis Burns (Wiradjuri aboriginal) will perform at our “Art of the Didgeridoo” exhibit this Sat., July 30 at 7 PM! Lewis will play didgeridoo and display some of his own artwork available for purchase. To honor his culture, Lewis will wear traditional laplap and body paint (see photo). Crafted and decorated by Djapardi (pronounced Jah-’par-dee) who first stains the wood and then carefully etches Australian animals, reptiles, and aboriginal symbols into the wood, revealing the lighter wood beneath the stain. He then does a bit of detail with painted dots before sealing the wood. The artwork on this didge features a big barramundi fish and sea turtles along with aboriginal symbols for billabongs (water marshes) and lapping waves. Ken “Djapardi” Morgan is from New South Wales, Australia, and his imagery depicts animals and icons symbolic of his bush country ancestry. Crafted from termite hollowed eucalyptus. All of the natural bark has been left on the bottom for a truly organic look and feel (the bark is sealed so it won’t flake off). The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone.
