Help Support Documentary on Djalu on Kickstarter

Los Angeles based documentary film maker Joshua Bell is raising funds on Kickstarter to help complete his latest project “Why is No One Listening” which focuses on Djalu Gurruwiwi and his community. For those who may not know, Djalu is an Australian Aboriginal elder, leader of the Galpu clan, and world-renowned didjeridu master, as he fights for the future of his family and his community. Alcoholism and drug abuse run rampant, while a ravenous bauxite mining company continues to swallow up sacred land and precious resources. Armed with his yirdaki (didjeridu), and a mixture of Aboriginal spirituality and adopted Christianity, Djalu struggles to maintain his culture and traditions within the tiny mining community of Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory.

The future of Djalu’s Galpu clan remains uncertain. Despite Djalu’s intentions to preserve tradition, his open heart, and his willingness to speak to the Western world are frowned upon by other clan leaders. Without a clear successor to his leadership, Djalu, in his eighties, is uncertain as to who will carry on his legacy and sacred knowledge of traditional didjeridu.

We here at LA Outback encourage everyone to check the campaign, and if possible, donate to this worthy cause.

    Aloha from Hawaii!

Over a decade ago, I learned to play Yidaki from Stephen Kent in a small music store while visiting San Francisco, which forever changed my life and gifted me in ways too many to count or express in words. The music of David Hudson and so many others has touched my soul likewise. My most treasured artifacts are four Djalu original Yidaki designs, handcrafted by the master himself. They play like no other I have yet experienced. Djalu is a living treasure, his life and skills gifted to the world, and his talents beyond compare. From the depths of my heart and soul, I give thanks and praise for Djalu and his life, and the incomparably wonderful gifts he has given me over the years.

Although I strongly support the film's creation, the title requires a tiny asterisk. That asterisk is "except me".
